Title

Overview

Osmo LED Smart-Oil is a professional-grade, UV LED-curing wood oil designed for wooden flooring, stairs, and furniture surfaces. Unlike traditional drying oils, it cures instantly under a 395nm LED-UV lamp, making it the ideal choice for commercial environments, public buildings, and projects where rapid turnaround is essential.

Formulated without solvents, hardeners, or VOCs, Osmo LED Smart-Oil delivers a microporous, breathable finish that enhances the natural colour of the wood with a permanent wet effect. The dried coating is food safe, resistant to common spills and stains, and certified harmless to humans, animals, and plants, including compliance for children's toys and food contact surfaces.

Its hardwearing, water and dirt repellent finish will not crack, peel, or flake, and is particularly well suited to extractive-rich hardwoods and high-traffic or hygiene-critical environments. For professional and industrial use only.

Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential for achieving the best possible result with Osmo LED Smart-Oil.

  • Wood moisture content: the wood surface must be clean, dry, and frost-free, with a maximum moisture content of 12%.
  • Existing coatings: all old paint and varnish coatings must be completely removed before application.
  • Filling: fill any small cracks, larger gaps, or holes using a suitable wood filler or joint compound.
  • Sanding: sand the surface carefully, starting with coarse sandpaper and finishing with the following grades:
    • Floors: final sanding with colourless sandpaper P100–120
    • Furniture: final sanding with colourless sandpaper P120–180
  • Dust removal: before oiling, thoroughly sweep and vacuum the surface to remove all sanding dust.

A trial application is always recommended, particularly on unknown substrates, extractive-rich hardwoods, or when coating results may vary due to wood condition or moisture content.

Application

Osmo LED Smart-Oil is ready to use, do not dilute. Stir thoroughly before application. For professional and industrial use only.

  • Ensure the surface is fully prepared before beginning (see Preparation Instructions).
  • Apply the LED Smart-Oil thinly using a double-bladed spatula or similar tool. For V-joints or other open surfaces, apply partially with a microfibre roller rather than across the entire surface.
  • Spread and massage the oil into the surface using a white pad, either manually or with a single-disc machine. Smooth the area to ensure an even, streak-free finish. If streaks remain, turn or replace the pad, this is an indication that too much product has been applied.
  • Cure the applied finish immediately using an Osmo UV LED SmartLight Pro (or suitable UV LED spotlight) held at a distance of between 2cm and 10cm from the surface.
  • For a satin sheen, apply a second coat: lightly sand the first cured coat with P240–320 sandpaper, apply the Smart-Oil very thinly (approximately 5–10ml/m²), smooth, and cure as above.

Important notes:

  • Apply only a small amount of product to a paint tray at a time to avoid pre-reaction.
  • Avoid all exposure to direct sunlight and conventional LED lighting with a UV component during application - curing will begin prematurely. Cover or darken windows if necessary.
  • LED Smart-Oil does not cure oxidatively. Without appropriate LED-UV irradiation at sufficient power and dose, complete curing will not occur and the surface will be unusable.
  • For extractive-rich hardwoods (e.g. wenge, merbau, jatoba), a test application is recommended before full use.
  • For coloured applications, apply a coloured LED Smart-Oil as the first coat and a clear LED Smart-Oil as the second coat (except for 5981 White).
  • A coloured primer can also be applied using Osmo Oil Stain - allow to dry for approximately 48 hours before applying the clear LED Smart-Oil.

Note: LED Smart-Oil enhances the natural colour of the wood with a permanent wet effect. For a near-natural appearance without the wet effect, use LED Smart-Oil 5984 Natural.

Aftercare & Storage

Once cured, Osmo LED Smart-Oil provides a highly durable, hardwearing finish that is straightforward to maintain.

Regular cleaning:

  • For day-to-day maintenance, dust mop the surface regularly to remove loose dirt and debris.
  • For damp cleaning, use Osmo Spray Cleaner applied with a damp mop. Do not flood the surface with water.

Recoating:

  • When signs of wear become visible, simply apply one coat of Osmo LED Smart-Oil to the clean, dry surface and cure as per the original application instructions.
  • There is no need to strip or sand back to bare wood for routine maintenance coats.

The longevity of the finish will depend on the level of foot traffic, the wood type, and the conditions of use. Regular maintenance will extend the life of the coating significantly.
