Tinted Colour Information

Tinted paint is custom mixed in house at Next Day Paint using our Little Greene tinting machine. We mix the paint on site, which means we can offer our usual fast delivery with no extra delay.

Tinted Colour Match paints can't be cancelled or returned as they are tinted to order.

A tinted primer can be used to help obtain the true depth of colour for your top coat or to reduce the amount of coats required when a drastic colour change is occurring. A tinted primer will not necessarily be the same colour as your selected topcoat. It will be tinted towards the topcoat colour and generally lighter in shade. For example if your topcoat is black your primer may be a shade of grey. If you are unsure about when a tinted primer is required please contact us and we can advise further.

Preparation

Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from dirt and grease.

Remove all imperfections and repair defects to achieve a smooth, sound surface

New Wood:

  • Seal knots in softwoods with Little Greene Aluminium Wood Primer to prevent staining, then undercoated with Little Greene Intelligent ASP.
  • Resinous hardwoods require cleaning, then treat with Aluminum Wood Primer as required before undercoating.
  • Ensure timber moisture is below 15%. Do not paint damp wood.
  • Green oak must be weathered at least 6 months before painting.

Metals:

  • Clean new metal (ferrous or non-ferrous) to remove rust.
  • Bare or corroded iron/steel should receive 2 coats of Little Greene Intelligent ASP.

Previously Painted Surfaces:

  • Remove loose or flaking paint and degrease with a suitable detergent (e.g. sugar soap), then rinse with clean water.
  • Sand with medium-grade paper to create a smooth, keyed surface, feathering edges where paint has been removed.
  • Apply 1 coat of Little Greene ASP to promote adhesion to existing coating.

Plastics:

  • Clean and lightly abrade surfaces to improve adhesion and durability.
  • For optimum results, prime with Little Greene Intelligent ASP.

New Plaster Walls:

  • Allow skim plaster to dry for at least 4 weeks (6 months for full-depth plaster).
  • Apply a primer coat of the paint thinned 5–25% (v/v) with clean water, depending on surface porosity.
  • Cut in using the same dilution.
  • Finish with two full coats.
  • For new, fully plastered walls, allow at least six months for the plaster to thoroughly dry before painting with Little Greene Intelligent ASP

Not recommended for lime or other natural plasters if fully dry and free from damp.

Existing Plaster Walls:

  • Lightly wash to remove dust or laitance.
  • Apply a primer coat of the paint thinned 5–25% (v/v) with clean water.
  • Finish with at least one/two full coats.

Not recommended for previously painted lime or other natural plasters.

Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the packaging

Application

Always test a small area of the surface to be painted to ensure you are happy with the finished results

  • Stir thoroughly before use.
  • Do not apply below 8°C, or externally if rain or frost is expected during application or drying.
  • Apply generously for a smooth, even finish, avoiding runs or sags.
  • Lightly sand between coats to remove dust and imperfections for a smooth, professional finish.
  • Note: For large flat areas, a roller application is recommended.

For brush application:

  • Use a high-quality synthetic brush suited to the project. Condition new brushes by washing and drying with a lint-free cloth.
  • Avoid dipping the brush too deep or overloading with paint.
  • Apply in even strokes, maintaining a wet edge.
  • Keep final strokes in one direction and avoid re-working once paint starts to dry to prevent lap marks.
  • For intricate work or in warm/dry conditions, extend open time by adding 10–15% (v/v) clean water.

For roller application:

  • Use a short-nap wool blend sleeve for smooth surfaces; increase nap for textured areas.
  • Maintain a wet edge and consistent stroke direction. Do not over-roll drying paint to prevent lap marks.
  • Add 10–15% (v/v) clean water in hot or fast-drying conditions.

For sprayer application:

  • Conventional: Thin up to 40% (v/v) water. Tip: 1.60–2.00 mm (62–78 thou). Air pressure: 0.28–0.41 MPa (40–60 psi).
  • Airless: Thin up to 20% (v/v) water. Tip: 0.28–0.54 mm (11–21 thou). Pressure: 12.6–19.6 MPa (1800–2800 psi).

Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the packaging

Aftercare & Storage

Storage: Keep unused paint in a cool, dry, frost-free place away from sunlight. Replace lids securely after use. When unopened and stored correctly, the product remains stable for at least 2 years.

Cleaning: For light dirt, gently wipe with a damp sponge or lint-free cloth using a lukewarm solution of mild washing-up liquid. Repeat as needed. Remove DIY dust by vacuuming, using a soft brush attachment to avoid marking nearby surfaces. Make sure radiators are at room temperature before cleaning. Cleaning while hot can cause uneven or patchy polishing.

Care: Avoid placing heavy objects on painted surfaces for one week. Consider applying suitable beeswax polish to high-use areas such as bookshelves to reduce long-term marking.

Repair: Lightly rub down the area, apply suitable primer to any exposed surface, then repaint the whole section with one or two coats as needed. Please note that spot repairs may not match the original finish.
