It is especially important that new or bare surfaces are fully dry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRemove all loose and defective coatings, stripping back to bare wood if necessary. Pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal may contain harmful lead, so special precautions must be taken if working with these coatings.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRemove and treat any mould, algae, lichen with Weathershield Multi-Surface Fungicidal Wash. Remove defective glazing material, clean the rebates and any loose or open joints.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRotten wood and problem knots should be replaced with new timber. Thoroughly rub down all surfaces to remove any grey, weathered wood and surface sheen from any remaining coatings, and then dust off (refer to your COSHH Assessment). \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eApply 1 or 2 coats of an appropriate knotting solution to any remaining knots.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFill any surface defects, open joints etc. with an appropriate filler and replace any missing glazing material with a suitable glazing compound.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\u003ch2\u003eApplication\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe recommend to test a small area before painting the entire surface to ensure compatibility.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eShake the container thoroughly to mix the Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePour out enough primer for the job into a suitable container. Do not use direct from the can or put any unused primer back into to the container.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDo not thin.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePrime all bare wood with 2 coats of Weathershield Preservative Primer including any new or bare replacement beading. Apply the 2nd coat as soon as the first one has soaked in. (typically 2-6 hours).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDo not allow first coat to fully dry before applying the second coat as this will reduce penetration into the wood and extend the total drying time. Allow 16 hours for second coat to dry.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWipe excess primer from surrounding paintwork. New joinery is often factory primed using a stain basecoat, also known as a dual-purpose primer. These materials quickly erode when left exposed and may need to be re-primed. Factory-applied pigmented primers should conform to BS 7956: 2000 (as amended).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAllow a minimum of 16 hours before overcoating with an appropriate Weathershield paint system.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAftercare \u0026amp; Storage\u003c\/h2\u003eDo not use or store in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.
