Overview

Caparol CapaSilan is a premium water-based paint formulated with advanced silicone resin technology, delivering a flawless flat matt finish, even under the most challenging lighting conditions.

Developed with large surfaces in mind, it has been engineered with a very fine paint structure, which gives the finish extremely low reflection properties, for luxuriously smooth and uniform deep matt results in any light.  Its long open time and excellent application properties make it ideal for large surfaces, allowing seamless, streak-free application without visible roller marks. With excellent touch-up properties, CapaSilan ensures a smooth, elegant finish on walls & ceilings, easy to maintain.

Low odour, solvent-free and unplasticized, it’s a reliable and eco-friendly choice for professional and residential interiors alike.

Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry, solid, and free from release agents, dust, dirt, or other contaminants. Prepare substrates according to the type of material as follows:

Renders (DIN EN 998-1 class CS II–IV, compressive strength ≥ 2 N/mm²)

  • Solid, normally absorbent and even renders: coat directly without primer.
  • Slightly sanding, absorbent renders: prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund, or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.
  • More sanding renders: prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Gypsum Plasters (DIN EN 13279-1, compressive strength ≥ 2 N/mm²)

  • Sand sintered surfaces and remove dust.
  • Prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund, or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.

Gypsum Boards / Plasterboard

  • Sand filler burrs and dust off.
  • Prime filler areas and boards with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund, or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.
  • For high absorption: use OptiSilan TiefGrund.
  • Boards with water-soluble discoloring ingredients: prime with Caparol AquaSperrgrund (see BFS Data Sheet No. 12, Part 2).

Concrete

  • Remove release agents, chalking, and sanding residues.
  • Prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund, or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.

Sand-Lime Masonry

  • Dry brush salt efflorescence.
  • Prime with CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.
  • For stronger absorption: use OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Existing Coatings

  • Load-bearing: Recoat matt, slightly absorbent coatings directly. Roughen glossy coatings.
  • Non-bearing: Remove coatings. Prime porous or absorbent surfaces with OptiSilan TiefGrund.
  • Glue-bound distemper: Wash off completely and prime with Dupa-Putzfestiger, or sand and prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Wallpapers

  • Woodchip, relief, embossed, or sample wallpapers: Coat directly (trial coat recommended for relief/sample papers).
  • Removed wallpaper: Wash off paste residues and prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Problematic Surfaces

  • Mould-infested: Remove with wet cleaning, treat with Capatox, dry thoroughly. Use resistant paints such as Malerit-W, Indeko-W, or Fungitex-W.
  • Stains (nicotine, soot, grease, water): Wash and allow to dry. Apply a barrier primer such as Caparol AquaSperrgrund or Caparol Filtergrund grob.

Wood & Wood-Based Materials

  • Prime with Capacryl Holz-IsoGrund.
  • For melamine resin boards: use Capacryl Haftprimer.
  • Note: Panel joints are not crack-free; for higher demands, use a decoupling layer with thin gypsum boards.

Old Lime Filler Techniques

  • Sand off the sintered layer.
  • If the water wetting test is negative: remove filler completely.
  • If test is positive: prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Defects & Repairs

  • Fill chips, joints, and cracks with Füllspachtel P.
  • For gypsum-based Q2/Q3 filling layers (<0.5 mm): use a transparent, water-based primer.

Application

Apply with a paint brush, roller, or airless spray equipment.

  • Dilution: Add up to 5% clean water before application (up to 10% for primer/intermediate coats). Stir well.

Airless Spraying (standard equipment)

  • Spray pressure: 150–180 bar
  • Spray angle: 40°–50°
  • Nozzle size: 0.019"–0.021"
  • Gun filter: approx. 0.31 mm (MW)

Airless Spraying (internally fed roller systems)

  • Spray pressure: 80–120 bar
  • Gun filter: approx. 0.31 mm (MW)

Coating System – White Coat

  • Primer / Intermediate coat: Apply a rich, even coat of CapaSilan diluted with up to 10% water.
  • Top coat: Apply CapaSilan diluted with up to 5% water.
  • High-contrast surfaces: Apply a primer coat first, diluted with a maximum of 5% water.
  • Differently absorbent substrates: Apply a primer coat of Caparol HaftGrund EG before CapaSilan.

Practical Tip

For ultra-smooth, low-texture surfaces: apply evenly, allow a short flash-off, then gently roll over with a Caparol FeinRoller. This creates particularly fine, uniform finishes.
